Hug your local river - Sunday is World Rivers Day

September 25, 2007.

Did you know this coming Sunday, September 30, is BC Rivers Day - a celebration held every year on the last Sunday in September.  BC Rivers Day began in 1980 with a volunteer clean-up beside the Thompson River in British Columbia, and the range of events has grown dramatically since then.  Events are coordinated by the Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia.

The success of this event in B.C. has also recently led to the establishment of a National Rivers Day, and as part of the UN Water for Life Decade, World Rivers Day has been celebrated each September since 2005.  BC Rivers Day is a model for World Rivers Day and concurrent river-related events will take place in a number of different countries.

Thames21, a UK environmental charity, is marking World Rivers Day on Sunday September 30 with a four day clean up of one of the River Thames’s dirtiest beaches, and is urging Londoner’s to help. The ‘Cleaner Thames Challenge’ will take place at low tide on the Isle of Dogs, East London from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 September.

Water will be the focus of a celebration at World River Day Fest on Saturday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Brooker Creek Preserve in Tarpon Springs, Florida.  The World River Day Fest will showcase water’s importance and offer ideas on how to conserve and protect it.
