WaterBlogged reader, Marie, recently asked, "Does O.A.R.S. have whitewater rafting guide training in the Fall 2008 or Spring 2009?"
Thank you for your question Marie! We do have two California whitewater rafting boot camps lined up for 2009:
Mar 22, 2009: A 7-day whitewater guide school (The price is still pending, but I believe it will cost approximately $900)
May 23, 2009: A 14-day advanced whitewater guide school including Swift Water Rescue (The price is still pending, however, it may run close to $1795.)
According to James Rodger, O.A.R.S. California/Oregon Regional Manager, the 14-day Advanced Guide School itinerary covers everything the 7-day Guide School does, plus a whole lot more. Participants will spend more time on the water and on more advanced whitewater, allowing them opportunities to learn more technical skills than acquired in a 7-day class. The 14-day Advanced Guide School is ideal for a person who would like to become a whitewater rafting guide.
(Historically in countries like Canada, guide school minimums are 14 days long before participants take government exams to become certified guides. In Australia, guide schools typically run for 30 days, followed by a training period of 60 additional days. New Zealand guides must complete vocational and technical colleges, which can be up to a year long.)
We will also be offering a Rogue River Rowing Clinic, and the details are currently being worked out. I’ll post information here as it becomes available.
You can also keep an eye out for details in the 2009 O.A.R.S. catalog, which should be available in November/December 2008.
At the moment, we do not have any fall whitewater rafting guide schools lined up, but *maybe* if we generated enough interest - O.A.R.S. might create something?
