Our commitment to the environment…
August 21, 2007.
O.A.R.S. is committed to being a leader in the field of sustainable travel. Our goal isn’t simply to be one of the most environmentally responsible tour operators in the world, but to continually raise the bar and challenge other companies to raise their standards as well. From escorting congressional staffers, eco-celebrities and politicians on the waterways of the Western U.S. to establishing a model business for ecotourism operators in Fiji, O.A.R.S. is professionally committed to the cultural and environmental well-being of the places we visit.

Why take a rain suit when there’s no rain?
August 21, 2007.
I’ll be going on a river trip next week where the expected day time temps should be in the 90s and the nighttime temps have been in the 70s. It hasn’t rained there in months. Your packing list suggests I bring a rainsuit and long johns. Do I really need to bring these?

Jump in, the water’s fine…
August 20, 2007.
A profound journey on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon now over 40 years ago changed my life in ways I never dreamed. At the time I thought it a reasonable goal to help people of all ages enjoy the best outdoor experience of their lives. It’s humbling, and fulfilling, to realize O.A.R.S. has shared outdoor vacations with more than 400,000 people since. Of course, these opportunities could not have happened without the tireless efforts of our office staff and expert guides. My wife and I initially ran the business together with just a handful of guides.
Our Angels Camp-based operation has grown to include 75 unique itineraries worldwide, a pool of several hundred guides, a small and incredible year-round office staff, an in-depth website and now a blog.
Although our website is quite extensive, we wanted to create a place for our guests to meet and talk and ask questions and share their vacation experiences with other adventurers. We hope people will interact with one another and our staff and guides. We hope you will share with us your favorite river stories, travel tips, packing suggestions, favorite river movie, favorite river recipe and anything else you feel might be pertinent to the enjoyment of an outdoor adventure.
I hope you’ll welcome Tracy Barbutes as our blog editor. (She refers to herself as a blogtographer.) Tracy is a professional writer and photographer who came to us with extensive international travel and whitewater rafting experience.
We are excited to see the blog evolve as we receive your comments and questions. So, jump on in, the water’s fine…
GW
